  1. A very fun and useful firearm.

Posted by Sgt WJF on 7th Jul 2015

I picked up the scorpion Evo3S1 from Vizards, who were very fair about the price and did not quote just because they had one in stock. I appreciate the speed, ease and ethical conduct of this company.
On to the Evo; This is a nice gun, yes it has a lot of "plastic" in it, but that keeps the weight resonable for a gun this big sold as a pistol. It is well built, good fitmemt, and seems like the usual high quality CZ puts out.
Four stars for the following reasons; First the often mentioned ambi safety paddle that works with gloves, but barehanded it really digs into trigger finger. The fix? Mine was to carefully file down the existing part to not remove it, but give it a rounder and reduced surface area that cleared my knuckle. You can buy an eliminator cap, but I still want the ability to control the safety from both hands.
The second reason for 4 stars is they touted that the charging handle can be swapped for us left handed shooters, and it can be....but there are NO instructions included and in the process of the swap I found you can easily break a small spring steel clip mounted at the end of the charging handle. There is a very specific and required tip on depressing that part to allow removal from the frame by inserting a punch in through the hole the retaining pin was removed from that "Should" have been included in the manual. Lesson learned, but it cost me $35.00 for a replacement. So, great gun, though needed some tweaking to fit MY needs out of the box, so it lost a star.
I do feel this gun is best served with either a stock (SBR) or a brace which runs a close second. The balance is improved, the stability is greatly enhanced all while keeping the weapon short enough to stay deployable from a vehicle.
Am I an operator or SOF guy in the sandbox on protective detail, no, not at all. I am your average joe who only plans on shooting paper- cans-or other range related targets, but feels very confident that if required this gun could fulfill a self defense role and I would be very well equipped.

  2. Nearly perfect design

To start with, Vizard's Guns & Ammo was very easy to purchase from. The process was straight forward, and they assist with locating an FFL dealer local to do the transfer, even calling them directly to arrange the paperwork. Great service!

When my Scorpion arrived, I noticed right away that even though the packaging it came in was cardboard and not a true case, the cardboard was very well made, padded the firearm well and was contour cut to keep it from moving and scuffing during shipping. I almost hate to throw it away. The Scorpion had a noticeable film of lubricating oil, which I appreciate, I'm not bent about it having a bit of spray the first few times it's used if it doesn't arrive with any corrosion issues. It came with all the usual gun locks, paperwork, etc. and two twenty-round magazines.

In the hand, this firearm feels very comfortable and balanced, if a bit hefty for its size. It comes with great factory peep sights with selectable rear aperture, as well as a hand stop on the front underside rail. I couldn't wait to fire this weapon, so I took it straight from the box to the range.

As stated, this thing is a bit weighty for its size, right at 6 lbs., but doesn't feel at all cumbersome in two-handed shooting. I started with some 20' shooting and found even with just the peep sights I was getting 1" max groups with the first few 5-round sets. At 30' the groups only opened up to 2". This was at an indoor range with slightly dim lighting and poor ventilation with my safety glasses fogging some, so I count that pretty decent.

One-handed shooting was still accurate, but extended arm shooting with the weight will get tiring rather quickly. The muzzle rise during single hand shooting is also a bit more, making target reaquisition take a bit longer. This firearm begs to be registered as an SBR, and my paperwork is in the process.

I fired approximately 300 rounds the first time at the range, and by the end I was completely hooked. The precision of this firearm once you have gotten used to the handling characteristics produces some amazing results. By the end I was shooting 2" groups at 60', which is the maximum length for this range. I can only imagine once it is registered and I can add a butt stock to it and an optic what kind of tack driver this thing could be.
